On January 15, 2010, with very little pre-planning, Dr. Alfred Hanmer departed for Haiti with Partners in Health. He and a team of physicians and nurses treated front-line wartime-like injuries in Haiti, resulting from the horrific earthquake endured by the country. A church was used to house 80-100 injured people as the hospital and school were already filled to capacity. Dr. Hanmer treated fractures, some open, compartment fractures, c-spine injuries, amputations…every type of imaginable trauma. Although medication, anesthesia and limited xray were available, orthopedic supplies were very limited. But the team was very successful in saving lives and limbs. Dr. Hanmer was grateful to be able to be part of this team and thankful that he was able to use his skills.
